A Passionate Pursuit; Part 1

As long as I can remember, I have always told people that when I grow up, I want to be a sports agent, just like Jerry McGuire. In the infamous 1996 film starring Tom Cruise, we see Jerry (Cruise) face the trials and tribulations of the athlete representation industry, coupled with personal struggles and financial instability. Throughout the film, Jerry and his lone remaining client Rod Tidwell played by Cuba Gooding Jr. build an amazing relationship, while working working on and off the field to earn Tidwell (Gooding Jr.) that final contract of his career. But what makes you fall in love with the characters was not the flashy lifestyle or the million dollar contracts, but it was the passion Jerry had for greatness, for people and achieving out his life's purpose.

Since first seeing the film at 9 years old (way too young to be watching an R rated movie), I have been on a passionate pursuit to break into the highly volatile athlete representation industry. I knew that making this decision comes with many obstacles to overcome but I wasn't aware that this decision would come with such a lack of clarity on how to achieve that status. Through my adolescence, I kept this dream within a proclamation's reach; "I want to be a sports agent when grow up!...I'm going to be just like Jerry McGuire!". As I began the college application process, still completely unaware of how to achieve this dream, I met with Ms. Haughton, my High School guidance counselor. When asked what career path I wanted to pursue, I proudly made my proclamation. She smiled and then asked what I was going to major in? My pride quickly shriveled as I realized for the first time, I had no idea how to become the next Jerry McGuire, I had no idea how to achieve my dream...

Ms. Haughton could sense the deflation in my demeanor as I pondered what major I should pursue. She smiled and shared with me that Sports Management was the best major to pursue and that she had a friend whom was a former sports agent whom I should call and talk to about my intended career path. Relief and optimism soon filled the room as I received my first piece of concrete advice and clear direction. Little did I know this brief exchange would spark series of conversations that ultimately equipped me with the tools to achieve my dreams....
